Triple play

Portland & Western GP39-2 2311 and Union Pacific C44ACCTE 5523 stop just before the Columbia Draw Tuesday evening while the BNSF 2724 rests on the NP tail.  Rare to catch three different railroads operatiing in the same location these days.

Broadway in the air

Soo high nose

Soo 552 GP9 worked the Marshfield, Wis., yard in the mid 1970s with 2201A, an F7A unit.

UP on Oregon Trunk

During the time the Cascades route was closed due to a massive landslide, Union Pacific ran the HKRV via the Oregon Trunk with power on each end.  The crew would run to The Dalles.  Then a new crew would take over on the other end, and head for Bend and southward.  Here, the HKRV travels through the short tunnel and toward Moody after crossing the Celilo Bridge.

Eastbound in the Gorge

From the early 2000s, this photo shows a typical Union Pacific merchandise freight eastbound near Biggs in the Columbia Gorge. Power was a pair of SD40-2s as opposed to today's SD70Ms and C44s of various configurations.

Alcos in Missouri

Arkansas & Missouri is one of the few railroads to only run Alcos (and MLWs).    In September 2002, the yard in Springdale, Arkansas, looked like this with T6 #15, C630 #70 and other units including an RS1 and a C424. 

Boeing transfer

Boeing fuselages move through Santa Fe Junction in Kasas City, MO, on Sept. 12, 2002, behind a B40-8W newly repainted into the Heritage 1 scheme of BNSF. Most of these units are no longer on the BNSF roster.

Amtrak in St. Louis

Many of the rail lines in St. Louis, Mo, and East St. Louis, Ill. are elevated as shown here where Amtrak units 70 & 152 head east from St. Louis, Mo, over the McArthur Bridge into Illinois on Sept. 16, 2002. This probably was the Lincoln Service which runs to Chicago.

B23-7's switching

Standard yard switch unit for ATSF in 2002 were the B23-7s, shown here at Argentine Yard in September moving a cut of cars from one area of the yard to another.

High nose GP9

Missouri & Northern Arkansas still had this high nose GP9, used as a slug, on its roster and parked in Cathage, Missouri, in Sept. 20, 2002.

BNSF shops in Topeka

Holding yard at BNSF's Topeka, Kanas, shops showed these units waiting for repair or disposal in September 2002. Included were some unique, even at that time, F units.

Fort Smith shortline

Fort Smith Railroad operates from it namesake town to Port Chafee, Arkansas, a military base southeast of Fort Smith using units such as this GP9 photographed Sept. 19, 2002, in its yard.

BNSF used this former Santa Fe GP7 as a trimmer & training unit at Argentine Yard in Kansas City, Kansas in September 2002.

LIttle bit of color

In these days of BNSF & Union Pacific, it is nice to see a Canadian Pacific spice up the scene at Rivergate T5.  A UP potash unit train is being shoved through the unloading facility in the background.  In the foreground, the two lead units of a BNSF grain unit train have uncoupled from the train and are headed back to unhook the rear DPU on Sunday, Sept. 2.

Working under the scorching sun, units often get weatherbeaten like this Union Pacific C44ACCTE unit stopped at the Vancouver center Sunday on a northbound soda ash train.
